Remixing Songs About Your "Girlfriend"
I've been remixing a few songs per week and I'm totally psyched. I've been loving the instrumental versions.
I learned an immense amount recording this record, stuff I should have probably already known. After we finished this we started demoing Dharmageddon using a lazy mono kick / snare / overhead 3 mic setup instead of micing all of the drums and doing dual matched overheads. We loved it. It reminds me of the Sonics. I also processed things differently on Dharmageddon, squeezed out some fun tones. When I went back to listen to Songs About Your "Girlfriend" it felt thin and I hated the stereo field.
I'm going deaf and I listen to everything summed in mono for that reason, welcome to my world. It's cool to hear them without the vocals, and that's coming from the vocalist. I always believed I should be writing the message but I'm not the messenger. If someone nails it, they can have the job, I'll just sling my axe around.
Now that I'm out of it and it's all behind me, I can't believe all of this came out of me. It's funny what being dopamine starved does to us, how much dignity disappears. It's like a bad dream. Knowing I'm not the same person anymore is a beautiful thing, I get to sing the shit that person wrote until I write some more.
